1. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
Safe, mild, and useful — but only in the right situations.
When to Use
- Chick looks weak or low energy
- Mild diarrhea
- Poor appetite
- After heat stress
- When water is very alkaline (common with well water)
When NOT to Use
- Bleeding or open wounds
- Respiratory problems
- More than one bird sick
- Bird too weak to drink on its own
- Already used for 3 days in a row
Dosage & Duration
- 1 tablespoon per gallon of water
- Use for 1–3 days only
- Return to normal water afterward
What to Expect
- Better digestion
- Slight energy improvement
- Cleaner, more stable water
2. Homemade Electrolytes
For dehydration, stress, or weakness — not for everyday use.
Recipe
- 1 liter warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 pinch baking soda
When to Use
- Heat stress
- Shipping stress (new chicks)
- Weakness or low energy
- Mild diarrhea
- Not eating for several hours
When NOT to Use
- More than 24 hours straight
- As daily drinking water
- Birds with respiratory issues
- Birds with swelling or fluid retention
Duration
- 12–24 hours only
- Switch back to normal water afterward
3. Warm, Quiet Isolation
- Place the bird in a small box or brooder
- 90–95°F for weak chicks
- No drafts, no noise
- Clean bedding and fresh air
4. Check Water and Feed
- Use shallow water cups to prevent drowning
- Replace water daily
- Remove wet or moldy feed immediately
5. When NOT to Medicate
- No antibiotics without a reason
- No mixing medications
- No harsh home remedies
6. When to Seek Help
- Multiple birds sick
- Blood in droppings
- Severe breathing problems
- Bird cannot stand or walk
- No eating or drinking for 24 hours
